Fish oil quality

Last Updated Mar 2009

Q: I just bought "twice the potency" fish oil. Please advise how many to take in the 28-day period, or if this is the wrong fish oil type. The pill contains:

EPA 720mg
DHA 480mg
Omega 6 67mg
Fish Oil 24000 mg (2.4g)

Thank you very much, Cecil

Dear Cecil,

A: What you bought is a fish oil that contains 460 mg of EPA and DHA per ml in two gigantic capsules. This potency of EPA and DHA is merely a better-than-average health-food-grade oil (which isn’t very good to begin with). In comparison, OmegaRx contains a minimum of 600 mg of EPA and DHA (actually it routinely tests at 680 mg per ml). To get that high potency requires extensive purification technology that is simply not used on the health-food-grade material you are buying. What this means is that you will be consuming lower levels of EPA and DHA with more contaminants (PCBs, dioxins, and flame retardants) as well as much more aldehydes and ketones that can damage DNA.
