IgA nephropathy

Last Updated Mar 2009

Q: My son (5 years old) has IgA nephropathy (not biopsy-confirmed). I keep him on an anti-inflammatory diet with fish oil (only about .5g). This diet, along with homeopathy, has been working very well for him; however, he has had very slight microscopic hematuria when he has a cold, but he has no more proteinuria. I want to put him into an optimal Zone for fish oil. What would you suggest to do for someone at such a young age? I am willing to get his blood tested.

A: I would increase the fish oil to 2.5 grams of EPA and DHA per day. That would be 1 teaspoon of liquid ultra-refined fish oil or four capsules of ultra-refined fish oil. The blood test will give you better insight into his needs to maintain an appropriate zone of inflammation control.
