Q: Do you have experience with the effects of the Zone lifestyle on lipomas? Lipomas are fatty, benign tumors located just under the skin. They're essentially "hardened" areas of fat. They can be up to a couple inches across and when large like that, they are unsightly. They can be surgically removed.
My questions are: Do the lipomas shrink at the same rate as the rest of one's excess body fat, or faster/more slowly. At one's ideal body fat percent, do they go away completely? I was at 34 percent body fat (target 12-15 percent). I've been on the Zone Diet for more than two weeks now, supplement with 2.5-plus grams of OmegaRx, and walk or walk/run 1.5 miles five or six days/week. I've lost 1.5 inches off my waist, my energy level is way up, and I feel healthier. My carb cravings are almost gone now too. I'd just like to know if there's light at the end of the tunnel on these lipomas.
A: There is little linkage between lipomas and total body fat. It appears that they are caused by micro-trauma in the skin. However, it is not unreasonable to think that silent inflammation drives the development of lipomas. Therefore as you continue to lose excess body fat using the Zone Diet, you will be decreasing silent inflammation and reducing the likely reappearance of future lipomas.
