Cholesterol

Last Updated Apr 2009

Q: I have high Cholesterol (271), (HDL 82, LDL180, trigly52, ratio:3.3).The doctor put me on a statin(Simvastatin),and about that time I started eating Dr Sears’ Zone cereal.  I weigh about 125, which is the high end of my range for weight.  I have a bone density issue so the only other medication I take is Fosamax. After three months of being on the statin, I had another blood test and it came back: Choles(264) HDL 73, LDL 181, Trig 51 ratio: 3.6 So my question is: what made the HDL loose 9 points? I'm disappointed in the test results.  To me it looks like everything I am doing just affected the good stats. My HDL has been in the 80s for most of my adult life, so this seems odd to me.

A:The change in HDL levels is within the typical variation of the HDL measurement. One reason why the statin has had no effect on your blood chemistry is that it is the only drug known to increase arachidonic acid.
