Hi, Dr. Sears,
I saw you speak at Integrative Nutrition recently, and I am so impressed with the Zone. My brother has two auto-immune diseases. One is sarcoidosis, which he has had for about 20 years, and it is unclear if he still has it as he hasn't had a chest X-ray in awhile. The other is ankylosing spondylitis, which has recently been diagnosed. I was hoping you could give me some advice since I am counseling him, and I feel so worried about him. Besides following the Zone Diet, what would be a supplement protocol for him? Thanks so much, and again your lecture was awesome.
Maria
Dear Maria,
A: Both conditions are inflammatory diseases. I would recommend supplementing the Zone Diet with 7.5 grams of EPA and DHA per day. A strict Zone Diet will reduce the AA (toxic fat) that drives the inflammation, and the EPA and DHA will dilute out the remaining AA to reduce the formation of inflammatory mediators that cause the inflammation in the first place.
