Resolvins

Last Updated Apr 2009

Q: I read about resolvins and small doses of aspirin in your "resources" materials.  This seems to have promise in healing injuries or in recovering from strenuous activity. I'm confused, however, about how to use these small doses of aspirin.  How often should these be taken given the half-life of aspirin, and what time of day? Also, should this be a regimen to follow all the time or just to recover from an injury? I have been unable to find a reliable dose of aspirin smaller than 81 mg.  Breaking a baby aspirin in half is not easy to do and get the 30 mg., just guessing when you do this.  Do you know of an accurate and reliable source?

A: The data for the benefits of resolvins is robust. Cutting an 81 mg aspirin (a baby aspirin) is difficult. Using a guillotine-like pill cutter is the best. The fish oil will have a half life of two days, and that of the aspirin is 20 minutes. However, the aspirin will covalently attach to the COX enzyme that extends its functional lifetime of the resolvins for a considerable period of time. Bottom line, once a day dosing for both is fine.
