Whey protein

Last Updated May 2009

Hi, Dr. Sears,

Q: I have been on the Zone for approximately 10 years. I am interested in whey protein, but a few years ago I read “Eat Right for your Blood Type,” and I am concerned as I am an O type, and he suggests whey and dairy are to be avoided. Do you know anything about this? Sometimes I wish I had never read it. Does this diet have any validity? I certainly don’t have any noticeable effects of eating whey, but this information has me concerned. Your expert advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Angela

Dear Angela,

A: I would not be concerned about the whey protein. If you have lactose intolerance, it would come from lactose, not the whey protein. Try not eating any dairy products for six weeks. If you have not seen a major difference, then you are not lactose intolerant. If following what is advocated in the book makes you feel better, continue to eat that way. If you see no difference, then don’t.
