Chocolate

Last Updated May 2009

Q: I've looked but have not found anything you have written about chocolate as part of eating in the Zone.  Do you see dark chocolate fitting into the Zone lifestyle?  What about probiotic dark chocolate?

A:Chocolate is rich in polyphenols that are also extremely bitter. An example is unbaked cooking chocolate, which is 100 percent cocoa. Even this type of chocolate is also rich in cocoa butter. To make chocolate more palatable, manufacturers simply keeping adding more sugar and milk to it until it is the composition of a typical candy bar. If you eat chocolate for health, then try to make sure it contains more than 85 percent cocoa and eat one small piece a day.
