Type II diabetes, weight loss and the Zone

Last Updated May 2009

First off, I want to give my sincerest thanks to Dr. Sears for researching and coming up with this most reasonable of eating plans. It has changed my life. I am 63 years old and have never been diabetic in the past, but I was severely overweight.

In May of 2008, just out of curiosity, I asked a diabetic co-worker of mine to check my blood sugar on her glucose meter. She told me she would on the next day, but that I shouldn't eat breakfast until after the test. As it turned out, my fasting blood glucose was 428! She retested me a few more times over the next two weeks, and it was still in the low 400s. She advised me to immediately seek medical care and get on insulin.

Some years back I had bought the Zone book and remembered there was information about insulin in it. So I reread the book and decided to try the Zone before heading to the doctor. I really did not want to start insulin therapy even though I was very afraid not to. For the next month while I was "Zoning", my friend tested me a few times a week and imagine my surprise when in early June my fasting blood glucose was at 303. I finally bought my own glucose testing meter and now test myself daily.

I continued following the Zone and began taking omega-3 supplements along with vitamin D and B6, among a few other supplements. By October 2008 my fasting blood glucose readings were in the 150's! Now, in May 2009, they range anywhere from 107 to about 127. Yes, I still have a bit to go, but I have made the Zone a permanent lifestyle change along with a good walking program. So, I know I will get to the ideal blood glucose range very soon. As for my weight, I have lost 75 pounds - down from 225! I weighed in today at 150 pounds. I have never felt better in my life.

One caveat, though. I am in no way suggesting that anyone stop their insulin or fail to get medical advice! I do suggest trying the Zone and letting your doctor determine if your insulin prescription needs to be lowered. I know I took a chance, and I was very lucky not to have suffered any permanent damage to my body. I believe it depends on how long someone has been diabetic; I wasn't in that state for very long before I started on the Zone, and I did get much good advice from a very well-educated alternative health practitioner (this practitioner holds a doctorate and is a professor of physiology at one of the premed colleges in a state university).

And finally, the Zone was the easiest eating plan I have ever tried. I never feel hungry, and I never feel stuffed. It is awesome. Once again - THANK YOU Dr. Sears.
