Fish oil and diabetes

Last Updated Aug 2009

Dr. Sears,
Q: Could you please comment on a recent article from PCRM 8/14/09 stating that fish and fish oil leads to diabetes.

A:  Consuming fish or fish oil no more leads to diabetes than it leads to heart disease.  In fact, both heart disease and diabetes are inflammatory conditions that can be significantly aided by fish oil.  However, unless you are reducing the over-production of arachidonic acid (i.e. toxic fat) by the diet, the benefits of fish or fish oil can be easily overwhelmed.
