Fish oil and cancer

Last Updated Sep 2009

Dr. Sears,

I have read your book “The OmegaRx Zone” and I have researched several articles from library databases out of curiosity of fish oil's benefits. Now I am working on a speech for fish oil and I have begun doing research from library databases at my college TCU. After reading some of the benefits from your book and other articles, and seeing the results myself as far as fitness from fish oil supplementation, I am convinced of its potential. I have shared this with my mom and she has started taking pharmaceutical fish oil. One of her best friends has cancer in his blood stream. They have tried treatments and she wants to tell them to try fish oil, but we need more information to tell them so that they don't blow it off. I have read the section in your book, but I need your words of wisdom.

A:  Our clinical trials in prostate and throat cancer indicate that at least 7.5 grams of EPA and DHA are required to have a significant impact.  In addition, one should be following a strict, anti-inflammatory diet, like the Zone Diet, to reduce arachidonic acid formation that drives the cancer.
