Zone Diet and CrossFit

Last Updated Feb 2010

Q: In all your books you consider a moderate daily training the best for the Zone Diet. How is it possible to consider that the CrossFit training program (very intensive work) is better?

Many thanks, Claudio A.

Dear Claudio,

A:  I define moderate daily training as about 30 minutes per day using a varying schedule of exercises (aerobic, anaerobic and flexibility) at a moderate level of intensity.  This is a schedule that most people can hopefully comply with for a long-term basis.  CrossFit training is done at much higher intensity, but for shorter duration.  The higher intensity training will cause greater release of growth hormone in response to this type of training, but it also requires more rest between training sessions.  Growth hormone is a very powerful fat-burning and muscle-building hormone so you maximize your total exercise benefits.  Unfortunately, most people simply don’t have that type of exercise discipline.
