Zone Diet as it relates to cancer

Last Updated Aug 2007

Q: I read the recommendations in the Zone book regarding diet and cancer, and it says to restrict total calorie intake. What would be the optimal caloric intake for a cancer patient? (In my own case, I am a 49-year-old woman who is 5-feet 1-inch tall and weighs 110 pounds.)

A: You want to restrict calorie intake without restricting micronutrient (vitamins and minerals) intake or causing hunger. The only way is through the Zone Diet, which provides adequate levels of protein and by using low glycemic-load carbohydrates like fruits and vegetables. You get the maximum micronutrient intake with the least amount of carbohydrates. For a person of your stature, I would suggest a total intake of 10-11 blocks per day as well as at least 5 grams of EPA and DHA to reduce inflammation.
