Allergic to fish
Last Updated Aug 2007
Q: Dear Dr. Sears,
I am very allergic to all fish (but not to any shellfish), so I obviously can't eat fish as part of the Zone diet. However, I am not sure whether I am also allergic to fish oil additives. How are fish oil additives actually made? Do you think a fish allergy is likely to apply to fish oil additives as well?
Rosalind
A: Dear Rosalind:
Highly purified pharmaceutical-grade fish oil is totally non-allergenic. This would be the ideal choice for you as the toxins have been refined out. Usually most of the allergenic response to fish comes from the protein components in the fish. Check with your doctor.
