Prostate cancer survivor

Dear Dr. Sears,
I can't believe I am alive after prostate cancer. I was operated on 6 years ago,
it was a large tumor that had spread to my lymph nodes in two places.
I soon learned that prostate cancer was treated differently than breast cancer. I
knew something was basically wrong and I was looking for answers. I do not
remember how I contacted Dr. Sears, but he faxed me some sheets and suggested I
change my diet and start taking fish oil capsules. I continue the Zone diet, but
sometimes I "cheat" just a little.
I did a lot of my own research on the Internet with PUB MED, and other medical
libraries. I took ideas to my family doctor, and he would let me do most of what I
requested. His job was to keep me from killing myself.
Three or four years ago, little if anything, was published in the medical
literature about caloric restriction to keep cancer from returning. In fact there
was not too much that I could find about insulin in connection with cancer. Then
several research articles started to appear. It was proven with mice they gave
cancer to, that if you cut the calorie intake in one group, that group lived longer
than the control group that ate all they wanted to on their regular diet. Then,
more insulin research came about -- IGF-1, IGF-2, IGFBP-5,-- and on and on and what
do you know, the medical research establishment started to catch up to what Dr.
Sears has been preaching all along; control your diet, control your sugar, control
the amount of fat, and type of fat. There is plenty of research showing the
advantage of EPA (fish oil) for cancer people. I have been taking EPA for 6 years.
Dr. Sears should receive the Nobel Prize. I joined several prostate cancer groups
on the Internet. Many of my friends who had less extensive cancer than mine have
passed on. I owe much of my success to the Zone diet and my aggressive approach to
my treatment. I really believe I would not be here today if it was not for this
excellent diet.
