Heparin in pregnancy

Last Updated Sep 2007

Q: My specialist advised my wife to take heparin for her fourth pregnancy as she had DVT for her third pregnancy. We are thinking of not taking the specialist's help as we are thinking of a more holistic approach. My wife is taking Omega-3, exercising regularly, etc., etc. What dosage of omega-3 do you recommend? Any other advice from you is appreciated.

A: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can be mediated by EPA and DHA. I would recommend 2.5 grams of EPA and DHA per day not only to help reduce the DVT, but more importantly to provide the necessary building blocks for neural development of the child.
