Headaches

Last Updated Oct 2007

Q: I started this diet on Sunday. Every day since I started, I have had a headache, and I have felt nauseated. Is this withdrawal from the sugar? Or do you have another possible solution?

A: Headaches can occur if you are accustomed to eating a high-carbohydrate diet because your body is adjusting from a carbohydrate-burning metabolism to a fat-burning metabolism. For the first week, add some extra carbohydrates at each meal. After the end of the first week, reduce extra carbohydrates back to the levels of the Zone Diet. After that point, you will have no headaches because your metabolism has adjusted to a lower glycemic load.
