Goat's milk

Last Updated Oct 2007

Q: How can I make a goat's milk formula for an infant to either supplement when my wife cannot breast feed or add to breast milk? I do not want to use cow's milk or powdered formula from cow's milk.

A: There remains a lot a controversy on goat's milk as a replacement to cow's milk. Both contain lactose and share many of the same allergic responses to protein. Goat's milk is also lower in micronutrients than cow's milk. The European Commission on Food Safety did not endorse goat's milk as a replacement in its most recent communication in 2006. In England goat's milk and soy-based formulas are not recommended. That being said, there are numerous suppliers of goat's milk on the Internet, but I would recommend staying with human breast milk as long as possible.
