Use of fish oil for Canavan disease

Last Updated Feb 2008

Q: I read an article on the use and success of fish oil on the coal miner by Dr. Julian Bailes. My 18-month-old grandson has been diagnosed with Canavan disease. My question is this: Is it possible fish oil can be used to stop or slow down the deterioration of his brain and if so what dosage?

A: Most brain disorders are caused by increased neuro-inflammation. The EPA and DHA found in fish oil can reduce that inflammation as these fatty acids can easily cross the brain blood barrier. I would recommend starting at 10 grams of EPA and DHA in a liquid form (about 4 teaspoons) in three equal doses throughout the day. I would also recommend mixing two parts SeaHealth Plus with one part fish oil as was done for the sole survivor of the Sago Mine disaster.
