Low-purine diet

Last Updated Mar 2008

Q: I have had bouts with kidney stones on and off for the last 20 plus years.  My urologist has instructed me to adhere to a low-purine diet.  Since the low-purine diet stipulates that fish, such as sardines are to be avoided, does this preclude me from taking Omega-3 fish oil supplements?  If so, are there any other sources of Omega-3 (such as flaxseed oil) that would be safe for me?
A: Fish oils are free of purines. Fish oil will have a greater benefit in helping to pass the existing kidney stones than flaxseed oil.
