Q: Can following the zone diet reduce cholesterol levels? How?

Troy

Dear Troy:

A: The Zone Diet reduces cholesterol levels by controlling insulin levels. High insulin levels stimulate certain enzymes that promote cholesterol production in the liver. The Zone is rich in fruits and vegetables that increase HDL (the good cholesterol) and lower in omega-6s and saturated fats that can elevate LDL. Fish oil supplementation helps lower triglycerides and improves LDL particle size. However, more important is controlling silent inflammation as research has determined destabilized cholesterol deposits on coronary arteries lead to heart attacks. Your best defense to reduce cholesterol and silent inflammation is to follow the Zone program and supplement with a minimum of four ultra-refined EPA/DHA omega-3 concentrates capsules per day.
