Fish oil for arthritis

Last Updated Apr 2008

Q: My husband has severe arthritis in his shoulders. In addition to an anti-inflammatory medication he takes Norco for the pain. Originally he took four pills daily and now takes three since he has added the fish oil. Recently I have been giving him more fish oil, and he doesn't complain as much about the pain. How much fish oil in the amount of grams is safe for him to take, in hopes of decreasing the pain medication further? Thanks.

Dear Sharon,

A: I would suggest 5 to 10 grams of Ultra-refined EPA/DHA omega-3 concentrates per day. That's 2-4 teaspoons or 8-16 capsules. If he doesn't experience improvement within seven days at 5 grams per day (2 teaspoons) consider increasing the dosage to 7.5 grams per day for another seven days. Hopefully your husband working with his physician will notice improvement. For the best results also follow the Zone Diet.
