Glucose and insulin blood tests

Last Updated Jul 2008

Q: I had blood tests done, one fasting and one without fasting, glucose metabolic and insulin. The test without fasting was in the high range for glucose and insulin, and the fasting tests were all normal. Which one do the doctors usually go by?

A: I believe your blood test without fasting was most likely glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), which is used to identify the average plasma glucose concentration over 2-3 months. An excellent range would be less than 5 percent. Ideally, the fasting insulin test should be less than 10; 5 is excellent. Following the Zone and supplementing with ultra-refined fish oil concentrate should have a positive impact on these tests within 30-60 days.
