Blood sugar rises during sleep
Q: When I test my blood sugar at night just before going to bed and in the morning just before eating, my blood sugar level is always higher in the morning. Is this normal? I am 5'11'' and 168 pounds. I had a hearth attack four years ago and take aspirin, Lipitor 20mg and Altace 5mg and exercise a lot (cycling). My blood sugar was always about 85 in the morning, but now it is always between 100 and 110. I was following a different type of Zone diet (Montignac) and since then my blood sugar has risen for the past three years and is staying in the same range. Even two hours after lunch I test about 105. The highest scores are always in the morning. I'm kind of scared of being pre-diabetic.

A:You appear to have nocturnal hypoglycemia. First I would recommend following the Zone Diet as it was designed for treating diabetes by controlling the balance of protein, carbohydrate, and fat. Second I would recommend eating a small Zone snack (about 100 calories) before going to bed to control the nocturnal hypoglycemia. Since you have already had a heart attack, you should also be taking about 5 grams of EPA and DHA per day. You will find all the tools you need to get started on Zonediet.com. Click on eating.
