Lupus and thyroid removal

Last Updated Oct 2008

Q: I am 47 years old, and my weight is 130 kilos. I suffer from lupus, and my thyroid was removed 10 years ago (no cancer). How do these two illnesses influence weight gain, and is it possible for your program to help me lose weight? By the way I contact you from Greece.

A: Obesity is an inflammatory disease as is lupus. The thyroid hormone is responsible for metabolism. You are probably taking a synthetic thyroid that may not be transformed into the active T3 species. The Zone Diet coupled with high-dose fish oil (about 5 grams of EPA and DHA per day) should reduce the inflammation, thus allowing you to lose weight and reduce the complications of the lupus.
