Face flushing and phentermine

Last Updated Nov 2008

Q: Hi!  My doctor has had me on Adipex/Phentermine for about four weeks now, and as I improve my habits, I will slowly start to cycle off the diet aid.  I am a 26-year-old female, 6 feet, 190 pounds (was 200!), and I am getting myself back into the Zone with this positive help from him. However, in the last few days I have begun getting some semi-mild face/ear flushing...at first in the late afternoon and now starting earlier and earlier.  What I'm wondering is if you have a perspective on why – diet, fat burning, eventual side effects?  I do take four capsules of OmegaRx daily along with a standard multivitamin. Thanks for your help. This hot feeling is just striking me as odd, and my husband can't seem to feel it on my skin or hands.

Dear Michelle,

A: Phentermine is a weak amphetamine that causes initial appetite suppression. It can only be used for short time as you develop drug resistance to it, seeing complications such as hypertension, hence the flushing of your face. Ultra-refined fish oil will help control some of this flushing, but you will need about double or triple the dosage. A more viable approach is a very strict adherence to the Zone Diet, which will also cause satiety. That you can take for a lifetime.
