Balancing omega 3s and omega 6s

Last Updated Nov 2008

Q: I'm trying to lose weight on the Zone Diet and taking 5 grams of quality fish oil a day. My question is: now with all the 3s, what about balancing with omega 6s again. I'm sure in the past I was way out of balance the other way, but now I don't see enough 6s in my Zone Diet. Thank you for your work and greatly needed information about this crucial balancing of healthy fats, especially in American culture of horrible processed and fast foods.

Thanks again, Donna

Dear Donna,

A: The ideal ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 is 2:1 or even 1:1. Most Americans are in the 20:1 or even 50:1 range! Linoleic acid (an omega-6) is found in virtually every food, protein, vegetables, and grains. To balance omega-3s and omega-6s, you don't need to supplement with any omega-6s. We get plenty from the Zone Diet.
