Niacin

Last Updated Nov 2008

Q: My husband's general practitioner has prescribed 500 mg of niacin daily to increase his HDL levels. He currently is on fish oil (2 tablespoons) but still has low HDL levels (around 30). What is your experience with the results of niacin?
A: High levels of niacin can also cause potential liver damage. The easiest way to increase HDL levels is by consuming more fat, especially monounsaturated fat, like olive oil
