Probiotics are weak activators of the microbiota in the gut. They are essentially used for target practice by the immune cells lining the gut to sharpen their bacterial destroying abilities so that when a real pathogenic bacteria invades they are ready to dispose of it. While there are some benefits for this constant target practice, the prebiotics and polyphenols in the diet are far more powerful in helping to create a heathy gut that is less inflammatory.
